Fujimae-higata is located at the innermost part of Ise Bay. Three rivers of western Aichi Prefecture, the Shonaigawa, Shinkawa and Nikkogawa Rivers, merge at this location. When the tides are at their lowest points, a vast tidal flat of 238 hectares (50 times the size of Tokyo Dome Stadium) appears.
Fujimae-higata is located within the city of Nagoya, a large metropolitan area with a population of 2 million people. Annually, 172 species of birds and 174 species of benthic organisms (crustaceans such as shellfish, crabs, lugworms, etc.) can be observed at Fujimae-higata. Furthermore, the area is visited by migratory birds from throughout the world that come to feed benthic organisms and rest. In terms of numbers, up to 30,000 birds of one species may gather in the area. Fujimae-higata is truly an oasis for living creatures which survive in the city.
